Church chairs can be beautiful
Our new building, at least for a while, will have chairs for worship area seating. This is for two reasons: our pews helped us sell our building and we may have to use the rear of the worship area for overflow fellowship space in some instances - hence, fixed pews are impractical. This picture of an old Scottish church shows that church chairs can actually be attractive. We haven't picked a color yet.
We've "test sat" a few types of chairs and the best are very comfortable. If your initial reaction to chairs is negative keep an open mind - I was against them at first myself.
Stay tuned: we'll post more on chairs later.

Influences 2
"Sheds" on the sides of a building are a great way to save construction cost and to give the building a traditional look. The photo below shows an old English parish church in Sedgeford, Norfolk with side sheds. Also note the row of "clearstory" windows above the shed roof, which our building will have in abundance. This building and others like it were among those that influenced our design concept. We're thankful that the people at Studio 4 were so willing to incorporate our ideas.
Influences 1
We visited a PCA church in Dayton a couple of years ago. This building had a profound influence on our design, in that it suggested that we might be able to make a balcony work. You can see Kim on the left. Our new building will have a similar tongue-and-groove wood ceiling and similar balcony. Their design, like ours, allows for expansion on the sides of the worship area into classroom space.

16th Century French Calvinist "Temple"
Just for fun, check out this painting of a French Calvinist "temple" in Lyon from 1565. Note the dog, which we don't have, and the octagonal pulpit, which we do have. We promise the seating in the new building will be more comfortable than this. Click for large version.
